Caring For Your Carpet

Proper Care and Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance ensures you get the most from you investment.  Regular vacuuming professional cleaning and proper stain removal are all important to keeping your carpet looking like new.  Moreover, with use, any carpet will soil and soiling will be more evident on lighter shades that require more care and maintenance than darker shades.  Vacuuming is a necessary ingredient of the maintenance routine but cannot be expected to remove all soil that is accumulated.

 The Vacuum: Your Friend

Your vacuum is going to be your best ally in keeping your carpet dirt free. To keep soil from becoming embedded into the carpet’s pile vacuum regularly. If you  allow soil to remain on your carpet’s surface it can damage the carpet fiber making your carpet look dull.

Vacuum low traffic areas at least weekly. Moderate to heavy traffic areas  require a more thorough cleaning– at least 5 passes with the vacuum. These areas should be vacuumed on  a daily or every other day basis. Thorough and frequent vacuuming will help maintain the beautiful appearance of your carpet and postpone the need for professional cleaning to restore the color and texture of your carpet.

Good vacuuming methods are highly effective but order’s from cooking vapors and air pollution can pose another problem for you carpet. Color loss doesn’t mean that your color is gone it is just hiding under a film of dirt.  This will mean a professional cleaning is in order.  Professional carpet cleaners not only keep your carpet fresher, brighter, and newer looking longer, they can perform other maintenance to your carpet.  Consider professional cleaning every 12-18 months depending on traffic areas, carpet color, and frequency of vacuuming.

Also, it is typically better to leave special cleaning requirement to a certified professional than to try doing it yourself.  Professional methods used incorrectly could result in damage to your carpet.

Basic Cleaning Steps for food and beverage spills

1 Scoop up as much of the spill as possible with a towel or spoon.

2 Blot the spot, DON”T RUB OR SCRUB. Gently press clean cloths into the stained area to remove moisture. Scrubbing can damage the fiber and set stains into the carpet.

3 Apply warm, NOT HOT, water to the stained area and blot until the stain stops transferring to the cloth.

4 If you can still see the stain, make a detergent solution by adding 1/4 teaspoon of mild non-bleach liquid laundry detergent (not dish detergent) to one cup warm water.  Don’t use too much soap as it is hard to rinse out of the carpet.

5 Apply the detergent solution, and let stand for five minutes, then rinse with clear warm water. Repeat until all the detergent is removed.

6 Place layers of white paper towels on the spill to absorb the liquid. Weight down towels with a non-staining glass or ceramic object. You can let them sit overnight.

7 When the carpet is dry, vacuum to restore the texture.

8 If you can see the stain after all this, repeat steps 3 through 7.  If just means that the stain penetrated deep into the pile and has wicked up the surface of the carpet.
