“I have used US Floors three separate times to upgrade my home with tile, hardwood floors, and carpeting and cannot say enough about the excellent service and quality. The installers were efficient, courteous and cleaned up after each work session. Integrity and quality, what more can I say?”

Carpet Quality Factors

US Floors believes their are several characteristics that determine the overall quality of a carpet.  The type of fiber used and the way the carpet is constructed determines the basic performance. Quality can also be enhanced by the way the fibers, or yarns, are twisted and heat set, and by the density of the tufts. Densely tufted carpet with a deep pile height has a luxurious feel; however, pile height is really a matter of personal choice and does not, in itself, denote durability.

Density

This refers to the amount of pile yarn in the carpet and the closeness of the tufts. Generally speaking, the denser the carpet, the more luxurious the product.

Twist

This is the winding of the yarn around itself. A tighter twist provides enhanced durability. Sometimes referred to as “the backbone” of a carpet.

Heat-setting

This is the process that sets the twist using heat or steam, enabling yarns to hold their twist over time. This is an extremely Important step in manufacturing yarn used in cut pile carpet. Almost all nylon, olefin and polyester cut pile carpets are heat-set.

Carpet Backing

This is a type of mesh used to provide a base cloth into which the yarn is tufted. Primary backing is often made of strands of polypropylene fibers, woven into a mesh. Secondary backing, also often woven polypropylene, is adhered to the primary backing once the carpet has been tufted and dyed (if the yarn has not been previously dyed). A latex coating is then applied and the backing is then heat pressed together.

Performance Ratings

Most manufacturers have a rating scale for choosing carpet for various traffic areas- high, moderate, or low.  This information can usually be found on the labels attached to carpet samples.  These ratings can provide a good point of reference, but are generally not a good tool to use to compare carpets between different manufacturers.

Benefits of carpet

Carpet is ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls and minimizing injuries when falls do occur. Carpet provides safety protection for the whole family, but especially for toddlers and older individuals. And with the thousands of carpet styles and colors, your ultimate choice will reflect how you want to personalize your living space. Carpet can be a neutral foundation, or it can be a focal point with vibrant colors and stronger bolder patterns and textures.
